What makes a resort actually "luxury" in the US?
Not the nightly rate, but the staffing and the space: several measurables separate genuine luxury from merely expensive. Staff-to-room ratio gives you service texture, and room count matters because a 90-key property and a 900-key property are different products at any price. Then check what the rate includes versus what sits in fees on top. Finally, ask whether dining, spa, and grounds are destinations or amenities-by-checkbox. Brand flags such as Luxury Collection, St. Regis, and the Aman tier signal standards, but the property-level numbers decide the stay.
Are all-inclusive luxury resorts a thing in the US?
Rarer than searchers expect: the US model runs à la carte with resort fees, unlike the Caribbean and Mexico where all-inclusive dominates. US exceptions cluster in dude ranches, some wellness destinations, and a handful of ultra-luxury properties bundling meals and activities. When do luxury resorts actually discount?
In shoulder seasons, which vary by region: desert properties in summer, ski resorts in mud season, beach properties after holidays. Book direct or through advisor channels with perks, rather than through public discount theater. Luxury properties protect rate and discount quietly; value shows up as included extras, upgrades, and fourth-night-free structures more than as slashed prices. A "70% off luxury resort" listing is usually redefining one of those four words.
